How to disable Avast! popup/balloon notifications
The only way to disable those stupid pop-up/roll-up Avast notifications from the task bar is to upgrade to Avast 5.0 and enable Silent/Gaming mode.
Don't forget the idiocy of still having to manually upgrade the program by checking if a new version was released at their website (the stupid program will not tell you about MAJOR upgrades, only minor ones).
I don't know why you would want to do it the way someone commented below, but here is his comment, properly formatted:

Comment: I sent Avast an e-mail stating I have a legal paid for Avast 4.8.135 valid till 2018 and it is [IN AUSTRALIA!!!] ILLEGAL to embed such a nag to encourage you to buy another product replacing the product you already OWN!! and is valid till 2018. The law here states that you can do this ONE TIME ONLY AND MUST NOT BE REPEATED UNLESS YOU REQUEST IT. Australia is the ONLY country that has the 'OPT IN" law and not the 'OPT OUT'.
By federal law they must supply me with the method to permanently disable this nag. Also, it is illegal to cripple, disable, refuse, any virus update tables for MY edition of Avast until the program license runs out in 2018. If they decide NOT to support the virus update table they will be compelled by our law to supply me with a valid, registered version of the program and the ability to update both program and data base until my paid for program runs out in 2018. THAT'S THE LAW !!!!
